Mon 8th March - Steep Ladies 'A' v Haslemere 'B'

Steep 'A' 'B' and 'C' Ladies join forces to take on Haslemere !

On Monday 8th March the Ladies A team ventured out on a bitterly cold night to Haslemere to play their B team in the East Hants Div 1 Winter League. Steep lacking their normal firepower fielded only one A player with 2 B’s and 1 C player happily stepping into the breach. 1st pair Ann Saunders (Capt) and Michele Mangham had a tough match against the Haslemere 2nds with some lengthy rallies eventually winning 6-2, 7-5. Mangham played her part with her consistent returns especially on game points down and also hit some angled vollies and one formidable backhand smash of which Murray would have been proud. Saunders and Mangham then lost a close first set to the Haslemere 1st pair and were 4-1 down in the 2nd set when they clawed back to 4-4 and were 5-5 in a dramatic tie-break with Saunders serving, when the floodlights went out at 10pm thus they were awarded the set, 4-6, 7-6 dictated by the East Hants Rules. Steep’s 2nd pair, coming together for the first time, Judy Ross and Denise Angella, found it tough against the net-rushing Haslemere’s 1sts and lost 2-6, 0-6 but rallied  in their next match to come close to gaining their 3rd set, but experience from the away side showed in the end, and the new partnership lost the match 4-6, 0-6. Angella said, ‘There were a lot of deuces but we were unable to take the games. There was a nice but competitive atmosphere on the court and  I loved the experience’. Steep were pleased to have gained 3pts in a tough match away when some would have preferred cuddling up on the sofa with a good glass of wine on such a night.
