Steep Ladies 'A' travelled to Swanmore. After a long lay off because of rain, frost and snow it was the first match for some while.
Captain Cathy Robinson played with regular partner Ann Saunders but they lacked some of their customary skills which have made them such a successful pairing. They did keep the strong Swanmore second pair to a 6-4 3-6 draw in a see-saw match with some attacking ground strokes from Saunders and accomplished volleying from Robinson. Robinson and Saunders were very pleased to have kept the first Swanmore pair to 1-6, 6-2 draw in the second rubber as Swanmore have some County trained players who provide tough opposition. Determination and some canny play from the Steep pair ensured a fair result.
Steep's second pair of Penny Curran and Tanya Murray who are a relatively new but very successful partnership, went down 0-6, 3-6 to the Swanmore first pair, but dug deep in the second rubber which resulted in a 6-7 7-6 draw. Steep came back from 2-5 down to win the second set tie-break with some consistent deep ground strokes followed by drop shots which kept the opposition guessing. The match was played in great spirit an a good morning's tennis was had by all. The club is always interested in hearing from new players and would encourage anyone who is interested to contact the Membership Secretary at Steep Tennis Club. alternatively you can contact us via the website at www.steepltc.org.uk
