Steep LTC were given a lesson on textbook mixed doubles but unfortunately it was the away side Swanmore 'A' who gave it to Steep 'A' resulting in a 0-8 whitewash.
The Swanmore team was 'international', fielding Di Hill, a GB Vets player and Paul England, one of the East Hants League's top players. All the Swanmore players served well, got to net quickly, made good first volleys and hit penetrating lengths. Steep's 1st pair, Captain Ann Saunders and Duncan Read lost to Julian Harris and Di Hill, 1-6, 4-6 and to Paul England and Rochelle Penrose,3-6, 1-6. Steep's 2nd pair Tim Coel and Tanya Murray, playing together for the first time, lost to Harris and Hill 3-6, 0-6 and to England and Penrose 2-6, 2-6. Saunders who was still suffering from an injury said ' It was great tennis of a very high standard and played in a very sporting way which Swanmore commented on. We had to be playing our utmost best at all times which sadly we were unable to do on the day. Only the weather could have saved us but the rain came too late.'
