The first match of the Winter Season for Steep Mixed 'B' came under jeopardy when the captain realised at 5.45pm she was a man down !
Neglecting to check phone messages on the day of a match is a sure way of setting up trouble for yourself if you are a tennis captain. To discover at the very last moment that one of your best players is in fact in bed with a tummy bug and not on his way to play hits the panic button every time ! Luckily there was a young man with nothing better to do, in the form of David Jarvis who stepped in and saved the day. Jenny Hipsey and Gene Stoddart played very well together, Gene hitting left-handed heavy topspin shots consistently as always and serving well, Jenny showing her skill at net against some pretty strong opposition. They came away with all 4 sets. Maria Nash (Capt) and David Jarvis got off to a flying start winning the first set 6-0 with David serving so hard that 3 balls literally went through the fence ! Things didn't go quite so well in the second set which was lost by Steep rather than won by NC. However, Maria and David took a moment, got back on track and won the remaining sets easily. Steep Mixed 'B' won 7-1.
